Sodium cyanide is used among other things to extract gold from gold ore. Hydrogen cyanide is generated in this process in production that uses the manufacturing technology developed by Evonik, which is based on the Andrussow process. Evonik subsidiaries, Performance Polymers and CyPlus, have granted corresponding licenses to the plant engineering company EPC Engineering Consulting, which is based in Rudolstadt, Thuringia .
EPC built the turnkey Evonik plant based on these technologies, the foundation stone of which was laid in late September, 2010. In the first stage it will have an annual capacity of 40,000 t of sodium cyanide. Evonik will be supporting EPC with knowledge of the production and the safe handling of cyanides.
